In just a few weeks, the boats will arrive, and the cries of the baby seals will be those of terror and agony as sealers clamber onto the ice with their clubs and guns. The pristine white of the ice will be stained with the blood of these baby seals, bludgeoned and shot to death so the sealers can sell their skins to the fur industry….. We can prevent this.

In my 26 years as volunteer president of the Fund For Animals I’ve learned that the National Rifle Association will literally defend anything: high-tech bear hunting, live bird shoots, canned hunts of caged animals, hunting in national parks, and even the hunting of threatened species. The NRA is, in a word, murder on animals. (Amory was an editor of Parade Magazine, the author of The Proper Bostonians and other books.)

Is it the wind those branches stirs? No, no! from out the forest prance A trampling troop; I see them come! In one vast squadron they advance! I strove to cry,–my lips were dumb. The steeds rush on in plunging pride; But where are they the reins to guide! A thousand horse,–and none to ride! With flowing tail, and flying mane, Wide nostrils, never stretched by pain, Mouths bloodless to the bit or rein, And feet that iron never shod, And flanks unscarred by spur or rod, A thousand horse, the wild, the free, Like waves that follow o’er the sea, Came thickly thundering on.

It has been my habit since 1994 to practice a vegetarian diet. It is not necessary for me to take life to sustain my own. I believe that all life is sacred from the house fly to the human. God is the Creator of all Life. In the beginning God created all life vegetarian, both human and animal. It was not until after the flood that living beings began to eat meat. I do not preach that it is sin to eat flesh but I will say in this day and age it is unwise. God’s original design was a vegetarian diet until sin entered the world and death by sin. I choose to honor God’s original design with my diet. I do not have the ability to eat animals. I cannot do this in good conscience. I have offered my diet to God as a perpetual fast. I have chosen to honor His original diet and to reverence the life He created. In order to eat an animal she must first be dead. It is not wise to devour death.

It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much — the wheel, New York, wars and so on — whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man — for precisely the same reasons. Curiously enough, the dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of the planet Earth and had made many attempts to alert mankind to the danger; but most of their communications were misinterpreted….

It is difficult to entertain a warm feeling for a ‘medical man’ who can strap an unanesthetized dog on a table, cut his vocal cords, and spend an interesting day – or week- slowly eviscerating and dismembering him. I suppose that the researchers do not deny this thimselves — they claim that despite the wholesale bloody experimentation on animals, the only real proof of the drugs found by the chemists or the operating techniques suggested by the experimentation of animals, must be in the end verified by trying them on human subjects. (Clare Booth Luce: playwright, politician, and wife of the founder of Time Magazine).
